The changing face of apprenticeships

The way apprenticeships are being delivered in the UK is changing. Employers can decide where apprenticeships are needed and set out the knowledge and competences that they want their apprentices to have.

Our new Motor Finance Specialist apprenticeship standard, for example, will allow a school leaver or existing member of staff to learn the skills necessary for finance-related roles.

What are the benefits of apprenticeships to businesses and employees?

  • Financial incentives – From 6 April 2017, large employers with payroll costs of £3m or more will start paying a levy to fund the apprenticeship system. They will also receive allowances which can be used to cover costs associated with apprenticeships. Smaller businesses, not required to pay the levy, will receive significant contributions from government. Click here for more information.
  • Attracting school leavers and industry staff –Apprenticeships provide opportunities to young, talented school leavers who are not considering university, as well as attracting those already working within the industry.
  • Loyalty – A Government survey found that more than half of existing apprenticeship providers believed that apprentices stay in the business longer than other recruits.
  • Career development –An apprenticeship might provide an opportunity for existing employees to progress to a more senior role, and offer a pathway for development.
  • Industry standard – Apprenticeships provide a recognised standard of learning and competence across an industry.
